COMMENTS
What a great year. Light on musicals perhaps, but a bit more classic and international cinema than we've seen. After five years we've managed to scratch the surface of a century of motion picture history, and are beginning to unearth a few surprises. (I note with a feeling of accomplishment that this year featured five clips from films our resident cineaste Mike has never seen--previous years have turned up at most two.)
Thanks also to all those who submitted clips two minutes in length and shorter -- it helps to break up the rhythm of the evening, particularly when others are sneaking in clips towards four minutes (or longer). Weasels.
AWARDS
This year's Audience Award went to the opening credits of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, selected by newcomer Tod. And while we've discontinued the award for Best Clip Selection, it is worth noting that all four of Tod's clips (including RIO BRAVO, RATCATCHER, and SANJURO) earned at least one vote for the best clip of the night.
The Jessie, awarded to a clip that hits an emotional note amidst the general atmosphere of zaniness and style, goes to the ending moments of GALLIPOLI (contributed by Deirdre) for its final freeze frame and fade to black, an image of loss striking even to those of us who've never seen the film.
Realizing that the best motif of the evening need not be by design, I'll award an Accidental Baxter in recognition of monkeys. The two silent monkey clips were highlights--THE KID BROTHER (Aimee) and THE CIRCUS (Paul), rounded out by Perry's quick clip from Howard Hawks' MONKEY BUSINESS. Other favorite subthemes of the night: Owen Wilson (Christa), Ricky Jay (Paul/Perry), Bill Murray (Matt/Emily) and the appearance of both HIGH and SHANGHAI NOON.
Mike keeps the What the Hell Was That? award upon his mantelshelf with Jude Law's curiously disgusting dinner from David Cronenberg's eXistenZ.
And, two new award categories appear this year:
To classic clips that, after five years, provoke a "why haven't we seen this yet?" response, I'll award the Montalban, so named for my criminally previously absent clip from STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. This year I'll hand it to Christa for the best remembered scene from ROMAN HOLIDAY. Photo-finish runner-up status goes to Matt, for his choice of Bill Murray's classic Masters Tournament daydream from CADDYSHACK.
Finally, we're ready to institute an award for the best wordless clip. At previous parties we've not seen enough of these to single any one out, but this year there were so many great ones: RATCATCHER, HIGH NOON, MR. HULOT'S HOLIDAY... But even trained monkeys couldn't top the evening's nonverbal highlight: Gene Kelly's softshoe dance with a squeaky board and a newspaper from SUMMER STOCK. The Teller award goes to Paul.
